Senior year is already a lot.
College applications. School. Sports. Activities. Graduation plans. Figuring out what comes next.
And somewhere in the middle of all of that, you’re supposed to plan senior pictures.
Then comes the inevitable question:
“What do you want your senior pictures to look like?”
And sometimes the answer is…
“I don’t know.”
That’s actually where I come in.
For this recent Fox Chapel senior session, the goal wasn’t to simply take a bunch of pretty pictures. It was to create a senior portrait experience that felt like her—her personality, her style, and the person she’s becoming.
Because your senior deserves more than a handful of standard poses in a pretty location.
If you’ve started looking at senior photography in Pittsburgh, you’ve probably noticed that there are plenty of beautiful images out there.
But beautiful isn’t necessarily personal.
Your senior may be athletic. Fashion-forward. Quiet. Outgoing. Dramatic. Laid-back. Into music. Into sports. Obsessed with fashion. Or somewhere completely different.
Maybe they want editorial images.
Maybe they want something clean and classic.
Maybe they want a dramatic studio portrait mixed with outdoor images.
Maybe they want to bring their car, sports equipment, favorite shoes, or something else that actually says something about them.
That’s what we figure out before the camera ever comes out.

One of the biggest mistakes I see families make is booking a photographer before they’ve really thought about the experience.
They choose a date.
They show up.
They bring a few outfits.
And then the photographer says:
“Okay, stand over here.”
That’s not how I approach senior portraits.
I don’t want to create the same session for every senior and simply change the face in front of my camera.
I want to know who I’m photographing.
What does your senior actually like?
What makes them feel confident?
What do they want these portraits to say about them?
What locations fit their personality?
What outfits make sense?
Do they want something polished and editorial or relaxed and natural?
Do they want a little bit of everything?
Those answers shape the session.

Before your session, we plan.
And I mean actually plan.
We talk about wardrobe, locations, the overall feel of the session, and the types of portraits your senior wants.
I’ll help you narrow down outfits instead of leaving you staring at a closet full of clothes wondering what photographs well.
I’ll help determine which locations make sense for the look we’re creating.
And I’ll think through how we can create variety without making the session feel like we’re just checking boxes.
Another might be more fashion-forward.
Another might show off their athletic side.
And then we can finish with something completely different.
The goal is for someone looking through the final images to think:
“Yep. That’s her.”
Not:
“Those are nice senior pictures.”
There’s a difference.
For seniors from Fox Chapel, the location is part of the story.
We don’t have to choose a location simply because it’s popular on Instagram.
Instead, I think about what works for your senior.
The architecture.
The light.
The textures.
The surroundings.
The time of day.
The wardrobe.
The mood.
All of those things work together to create the final gallery.
And if your senior wants something completely different from an outdoor location, we can incorporate the studio too.
That’s one of my favorite things about creating a personalized senior experience—you don’t have to fit your senior into one specific photography style.
We build the session around them.
😂
Because let’s be honest.
Most teenagers are not professional models.
They shouldn’t have to be.
You shouldn’t have to hope your photographer can get a natural expression out of your child.
And your senior shouldn’t spend the entire session thinking:
“Am I doing this right?”
That’s my job.
With my background in psychology and years of experience working with seniors, I pay attention to how each person naturally moves, what makes them comfortable, and what helps their personality come through.
I’ll guide posing, movement, expression, and body position throughout the session.
You don’t need to know how to pose.
They don’t need to know how to pose.
That’s what you’re hiring me for.
This is the part I don’t want families to overlook.
Your senior session isn’t just the two or three hours we spend taking pictures.
It’s the entire experience.
It’s having someone help your senior figure out what to wear.
It’s knowing where we’re going and why.
It’s having someone guide them instead of leaving them wondering what to do.
It’s creating images that show different sides of their personality.
It’s giving them an experience where they can actually feel confident in front of the camera.
And then it’s deciding what you want to do with those images once we’re finished.
Because after all the planning, outfits, hair, makeup, locations, and photography…
I don’t want your favorite portraits to disappear into your phone.
These are the portraits of the person standing at the edge of a huge transition in their life.
They deserve to be seen.
And if your senior just told you:
“I don’t want senior pictures.”
You’re not alone.
Sometimes what they really mean is:
“I don’t want to stand around awkwardly for two hours while someone makes me pose.”
Fair.
That’s exactly why the experience matters.
When a senior knows what to expect, has some control over the direction of the session, wears clothes they actually feel good in, and has a photographer who knows how to guide them, the entire experience changes.
They don’t have to become someone else for the camera.
We just bring out the version of them that’s already there.
Senior portraits are one of those things that’s easy to put off.
There are always more important things happening.
Until suddenly it’s spring, graduation is approaching, and you’re scrambling to find a photographer, pull together outfits, and get everything scheduled.
Don’t wait until the calendar is packed.
The best senior sessions are planned before the last minute.
And when we’re creating a customized experience, having time to talk through wardrobe, locations, and ideas makes a difference.
If you’re looking for a Fox Chapel senior photographer who will do more than simply show up with a camera, I’d love to create something specifically for your senior.

[Start Planning Your Senior Experience]
What should my senior wear for senior pictures?
I’ll help you plan wardrobe choices before the session so we can create variety while keeping the overall gallery cohesive. Your senior doesn’t have to figure it all out alone.
Where do you photograph Fox Chapel seniors?
I photograph seniors in and around Pittsburgh and can help choose locations based on your senior’s personality, wardrobe, and the look we want to create. Studio portraits can also be incorporated for a more editorial or dramatic look.
Do you photograph seniors who are uncomfortable in front of the camera?
Absolutely. You don’t need to know how to pose. I’ll guide your senior throughout the session with posing, movement, expression, and direction.
How far in advance should we book senior pictures?
I recommend reaching out early, especially if you have a specific season, weekday, or location in mind. Senior portrait calendars can fill well before graduation season.
What makes your senior sessions different?
The session is built around your senior rather than using the same formula for everyone. We plan the wardrobe, locations, style, and overall experience around their personality so the finished portraits feel personal—not generic.
Serving Fox Chapel, Pittsburgh, Wexford, Gibsonia, Cranberry Township, Shadyside, Murrysville, and surrounding Pittsburgh communities.
